Why we need this course.
In the realm of oenology, much like human existence, wine embodies the potential for both healing and toxicity, representing a narrative of its inception and a trajectory of its destiny. This analogy draws parallels between the intricate journey of winemaking and the life path of individuals. Just as we emerge into the world shaped by the efforts of our progenitors and subsequently leave our imprint on the larger canvas of existence, wine, too, is a culmination of the energy invested in its creation.
In contrast, wine can be a lifeless commodity, mass-produced with chemical additives, devoid of any authentic expression of its inherent nature. Conversely, it has the capacity to represent community, become a symbol of life, of love, and a sublime elixir that unites and imparts joy; in the right quantities of course!
The community around wine can also influence this trajectory. Every time we spend, we vote, and that goes for pretty much everything, not just wine.
Just as wine can, (raised in the right way), arrive unto itself as the fullest expression of its own being, we humans also have the option to live our life in the most vibrant way possible, to be the most authentic manifestation of ourselves. Alternatively, we can merely exist, avoiding critical examination of media and societal structures designed to enforce conformity and perpetuate ignorance, albeit, our terroir plays a role but without getting into existentialism too early in the course, for those of us that are aware, or wish to gain more awareness, do we choose to support local producers or contribute to multinational entities that put the warped notion of profit first?
According to a report by IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, as of 2020, the global revenue of conventional wines was $327 billion (and is expected to reach 404.6 billion U.S. dollars by 2027), while the global revenue of natural wines was much lower at $1.8 billion, representing just 0.5% of the total market.
In its essence, the decision is between embracing transformation and embodying the inherent beauty of our nature, or compromising the well-being on the current trajectory humans are on, by inaction or wrong action.
This course is designed to help furnish us with knowledge that can enable us to make more informed decisions about wine, about life and ultimately about the legacy we leave, and more importantly why.
My journey into the wine industry, though unintentional, has been informed by my background in countryside conservation and Environmental Science, coupled with experiences of working with diverse individuals and groups from many divisions of society, in various settings, from the board room to the shop floor. Observing the distribution, sale, and consumption of 'natural wine,' I've discerned not only a rising trend but also a dichotomy within its culture, marked by both gentrification and division, it seems there are those that care about the planet and still those that are solely, or at least mainly driven by profit.
As the proprietor of Ireland's inaugural natural wine bar, I consciously opt to exclusively feature organically/biodynamically or ‘naturally’ farmed wines (as much as purse strings allow), viewing this as my baseline commitment that aligns with my ethical considerations and reflects my level of awareness. This decision serves as a conscientious choice to alleviate the strain on the Earth's resources. Embracing regenerative farming practices, which sequester carbon in the soil, contributes to smaller-scale production, fostering increased biodiversity and a more authentic and vibrant representation of the wine's terroir, is the only choice I have given my understanding of this industry.
Beyond the confines of a traditional course, my aspiration is to challenge conventional perspectives on wine, self, and the environment, cultivating original and regenerative thought processes. I seek to inspire businesses to champion regenerative agriculture within their communities, envisioning a substantial reduction in the ecological impact of winemaking. This course transcends its educational nature; it is an opportunity to support a transformative movement and elevate the vibrational frequencies of an entire industry.
Together, through commitment and action, we possess the capacity to effect meaningful change. Invest in the course, engage with its content, and embark on the transformative journey it offers. It is an invitation to be part of a movement dedicated to reshaping industry norms and fostering a positive impact on our planet.
